EU’S FIRST TRIPARTITE AGREEMENT ON ENERGY STORAGE REINFORCES THE RELEVANCE OF AIR4NRG’S MISSION

On 26 June 2026, the European Commission signed the first-ever EU tripartite agreement on energy storage, bringing together 22 Member States, energy storage developers and manufacturers, renewable energy producers, energy-intensive industries, and financial institutions around a shared set of commitments. The agreement marks a pivotal moment for the sector and reinforces the relevance of the work being carried out by the Air4NRG project.

Under the agreement, participating member states committed to enabling the installation of 30-35 gigawatts of new energy storage capacity over the next two years. As Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen put it, “Energy storage is the missing link in the clean energy transition.”

The scale of the ambition reflects the scale of the need: the EU is estimated to require around 200 GW of storage capacity by 2030 to meet the needs of its energy system, compared with around 55 GW installed at the beginning of 2026. Closing that gap will require a substantial acceleration of different storage technologies, coupled with renewables and other sources of non-fossil flexibility.

Why This Matters for Air4NRG

Energy storage plays a central role in stabilising electricity systems increasingly powered by variable renewable sources, storing surplus electricity and releasing it when demand rises, which lowers costs for households and businesses while improving security of supply. This is precisely the challenge that Air4NRG was designed to address through its innovative Isothermal Compressed Air Energy Storage (I-CAES) technology, currently progressing through prototype testing toward full-scale demonstration.

The tripartite agreement’s emphasis on project visibility, investment certainty, and accelerated deployment speaks directly to the kind of technology validation and demonstration work Air4NRG is conducting. As the project moves through its final phase, it is generating exactly the kind of technical evidence and operational experience that policymakers and investors will need to scale storage solutions across Europe.

Looking Ahead

The Commission has committed to supporting EU Member States in creating funding schemes for storage and exploring ways of supporting energy storage deployment under the Innovation Fund, while leading and coordinating implementation of the agreement and monitoring progress every year until 2028. This evolving policy and funding landscape offers promising opportunities for innovative storage projects like Air4NRG to contribute to, and benefit from, the EU’s accelerated push toward a more resilient, flexible energy system.

As Air4NRG approaches its full-scale test campaigns and final results in 2027, the project stands ready to demonstrate how innovative storage technologies can help deliver on the ambitions set out in this historic agreement.
